LAWRENCEVILLE - A Gwinnett County Superior Court jury will deliberate the case Friday against a teenager charged with murder in the death of a toddler he was babysitting.
Testimony in the case against 16-year-old Christopher Routh wrapped up Thursday. Four medical experts, including the state's chief medical examiner, testified that the teen did not cause the death of 23-month-old Emily Lynn Woodruff.
Chief medical examiner Kris Sperry and the others reviewed medical records and concluded that the child died from a natural medical condition that caused blood clots to form in her brain.
Routh was 14 at the time the child died in July 2001.
He also is charged with sexually molesting the girl. But Sperry testified that the injuries found on the child were consistent with her history of a skin disease and not of molestation.
Prosecutors claim Routh shook the child hard enough to cause her brain to clot and to make her stop breathing on July 25th, 2001. She was taken to the hospital but died two days later.
