LAWRENCEVILLE - A Gwinnett County Superior Court jury has found 16-year-old Christopher Routh innocent of charges that he murdered a toddler he was babysitting.

The jury reached its verdict this afternoon, after deliberating for one day. Testimony in the case against wrapped up Thursday.

A juror told WSB-TV that the prosecution did not offer solid evidence that Routh was responsible for the death of 23-month-old Emily Lynn Woodruff.

The state's chief medical examiner Kris Sperry and other experts reviewed medical records and testified that the child died from a natural medical condition that caused blood clots to form in her brain.

The jury also found Routh innocent of child molestation. Sperry had testified that the injuries found on the child were consistent with her history of a skin disease and not with molestation.

Prosecutors had claimed Routh shook the child hard enough to cause her brain to clot and to make her stop breathing on July 25, 2001. She was taken to the hospital but died two days later.
