ATLANTA - Drug charges against the son of Lt. Gov. Mark Taylor will be dropped because a substance found under the seat of a car he was riding in was not opium, a spokesman for District Attorney Paul Howard said.

Erik Friedly said Thursday that lab tests showed it was ``not an illegal substance, so we don't have anything to proceed on.''

Friedly said the formal dismissal would be at a Superior Court hearing Monday. The district attorney will also drop drug-trafficking charges against two men who were with 19-year-old Fletcher Taylor when they were stopped by police July 29.

The lieutenant governor said in a written statement he was relieved.

``As I've said before, I've always believed in my son and his innocence,'' Taylor said.

Authorities did not say if the lab determined what the 29.5 grams of substance was.
