Mercer wins season opener

ELON, N.C. - Aleem Muhammad scored 21 points to help Mercer to a 79-67 win against Elon on Saturday. <br> <br> Scott Emerson added 18 points and 13 rebounds for Mercer (1-0) on 7-of-9 shooting. <br> <br> Gary Marsh came off the bench to lead Elon (0-1) with 16 points and six rebounds before fouling out. Shamar Johnson added 11 points, while Ross Sims had 10 points and six assists. <br> <br> Mercer had a good shooting night, hitting 53 percent of its shots from the floor and 79 percent from the free-throw line. Elon made just 46 percent of its shots and 61 percent from the stripe while being outrebounded 34-27. Mercer also hit 4-of-11 3-pointers, while Elon connected on just 4-of-14 attempts from behind the arc. <br> <br> Delmar Wilson had 15 points and Clarence Baker had 13 points and seven rebounds for Mercer. <br> <br> Steven Harvin had 10 points on 3-of-11 shooting for Elon.
