MACON - The Georgia Sports Hall of Fame gets only about ten visitors on a Sunday, so the financially strapped museum has decided to close that day.
Starting next month, the downtown Macon museum will be closed Sundays. The move will scale back costs as state spending tightens and attendance lags below expectations.
Closing Sundays is expected to save the museum money, mostly in utilities.
The new hours will last through March, but the change could become permanent during the winter when visitor traffic typically slows.
The museum's attendance consists mostly of tourists on weekends and student field trips during the week. It earns only about $500 a month in gift shop and ticket-sale revenues.
The museum operated at a loss last year. The sports hall first opened in 1999.
The Georgia Music Hall of Fame next door will remain open on Sundays one of its busiest days.
