Federal officials to discuss smallpox vaccine recommendations

By
ATLANTA - Officials from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention along with the Bush administration's top smallpox expert will brief members of the CDC Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices about smallpox shots.

The committee will also discuss tomorrow other issues related to administering smallpox shots, including how to screen people, the vaccine's availability and whether it's safe to give other vaccines with it.

The White House has not made a final decision on who should receive smallpox shots. But earlier this month, Bush administration advisers suggested vaccinating millions of health workers and making the shots available to the public.

That plan is in sharp contrast to the recommendation made by advisory committee members in June. The panel said that only select state and city emergency responders and hospital officials should receive the vaccine.
