BANGOR, WASHINIGTON - A Trident submarine from the East Coast base at King's Bay, Georgia, the U.S.S. Pennsylvania, has arrived at the Bangor base on the Hood Canal.
The arrival Thursday is part of the Navy's plan to reconfigure the fleet of 18 Trident submarines. Four of the Bangor nuclear missile subs will be converted to carry conventional weapons or special operations.
To balance the fleets, two subs are being moved from Georgia to Washington. Another sub will follow the Pennsylvania around the tip of South America.
Each Trident carries 24 missiles, and each missile has eight warheads, making the submarine one of the most powerful weapons in the world.
