Dalton, Rome losses shake up AP high school football poll

ATLANTA - Dalton and Rome, tied at No. 2 last week, both lost to unranked teams, resulting in a thorough shake-up of The Associated Press high school football Class AAAA rankings. <br> <br> Dalton lost to Hiram 20-12 while playing without starting quarterback David Raymond, the team&#39;s leading passer and rusher. <br> <br> Raymond, 18, was arrested Friday afternoon and charged with rape, aggravated sodomy and aggravated child molestation resulting from an alleged July 7 incident involving a 15-year-old girl. <br> <br> Sophomore quarterback Logan Coffey, making his first varsity start for Dalton, had five completions for only three yards and an interception. Dalton had minus-6 yards of total offense in the second half. <br> <br> Hiram coach Tom O&#39;Boyle was unsympathetic. <br> <br> ``We&#39;re all as good as our second quarterback,&#39;&#39; O&#39;Boyle said. <br> <br> Dalton (2-1), ranked No. 8 this week, faces No. 9 Paulding County on the road Friday. <br> <br> Rome experienced deja vu all over again Friday, losing to Lakeview-Ft. Oglethorpe 21-18. <br> <br> The only team to beat Rome last season, Lakeview-Ft. Oglethorpe used its passing game to overcome its underdog status. Quarterback Josh Woodard completed 11-of-14 for 199 yards and three touchdowns. <br> <br> ``Hats off to them,&#39;&#39; said Rome coach David Humphreys. ``We&#39;ve got to mature as a football team.&#39;&#39; <br> <br> Now ranked seventh, Rome (3-1) travels to Southeast Whitfield on Friday for a region matchup. <br> <br> Thomson (4-0) continued to be the unanimous choice for No. 1 in Class AAAA after beating Lakeside-Evans 44-7. <br> <br> In Class A, Clinch County (5-0) remained the consensus No. 1 while Taylor County took sole possession of No. 2 after being tied with Hawkinsville last week. Hawkinsville fell to No. 4 after losing to Class AAA No. 3 Fitzgerald 35-20. <br> <br> In Class AAAAA, Parkview, Valdosta and Stephenson remained in the top three spots. North Gwinnett moved into the No. 10 position after Mt. Zion-Jonesboro lost to Jonesboro last week. <br> <br> There were no changes in Class AAA rankings with LaGrange, Screven County and Fitzgerald continuing to hold onto the top positions by remaining undefeated. <br> <br> The only change in Class AA this week was Chattooga dropping out of the poll after being tied for No. 10 with Charlton County last week. Americus, Buford and Early County all remain undefeated and ranked in the top spots, respectively.
