MACON - A janitor found a beaten body as pre-kindergarten students started school at Butler Early Childhood Center.
Bibb County Coroner Ed Bond said 39-year-old Dexter Zachary died from a blow to his head and strangulation.
Deputy chief of Bibb County Campus Police Stephanie Prater said students were never near Zachary's body found yesterday and classes continued as usual. Parents still on campus were told about the body, but parents were not called at home.
Detective Lieutenant Jimmy Barbee of the Macon police said the janitor discovered the body when a set of double doors leading to the rear of the school wouldn't open.
Barbee said the man's clothing was removed and lying next to him. There were no signs of sexual assault.
Sargeabt Robert Carr said police are seeking 44-year-old Walter Showers for questioning. He already has a warrant out for his arrest on another charge.
School board member Betty Phillips said the school has about 200 special-needs pre-kindergarten students and may move to a safer neighborhood next school year.
