GAINESVILLE - The Gainesville Parks and Recreation Department has finished with an $85,000 renovation of the Martha Hope Cabin, a 1930s era structure on Prior Street which for years was known as the Girls Scout Cabin.
"It included taking some of the logs that were rotted out and re-working those, putting in new plumbing, new electrical work, restoring the amphitheatre that was outside, making the facility handicapped accessible," Gainesville Parks and Recreation Director Melvin Cooper said.
The Martha Hope Cabin was built in 1934 by workers from the Civilian Conservation Corps and Civil Works Administration. The initial project was spearheaded by a committee led by Mrs. Annie Miller and then Gainesville City Manager Samuel C. Dunlap.
Cooper said the building's namesake was long synonomous with Girls Scouts in Gainesville.
"Martha Hope, who retired in 1995 after 40 years of service with Girl Scouts and the Camp Fire and who the building is named after," Cooper said.
The cabin will continue to serve Camp Fire Clubs and recreation classes - and be available for rental to the general public.
