Two Richmond County sheriff's deputies responding to a burglary call at about 11:30 p.m. found Jered Allen McCray, 21, sleeping in an upstairs bedroom at the home of Hazel Lucero, 87, the mother of former Augusta Mayor Charles DeVaney. Police woke the man up and questioned him.
"He (told police) he was looking for the Ramada Inn," said Lucero, who had called the police and reported someone wandering around her home.
"I don't know how he got the two mixed up. I can't compare my house with the Ramada Inn."
McCrary was given a written citation for public intoxication and was turned over to military police at Fort Gordon.
Lucero lives three blocks away from the Ramada Plaza Hotel.
