SALINAS, CALIFORNIA - At least 250 Monterey County senior citizens may have some money coming after being bilked by a Georgia couple running a fake $1 million contest.

Prize letters notified people they could claim the money if they sent a processing fee ranging from $15 to $35, Monterey County Assistant District Attorney Deanne Guy said Monday.

The big prizes were never paid, and the couple kept the fees.

``A lot of people sent in multiple payments because of mass mailing,'' Guy said.
Comical and Nitric Johnson of Atlanta pleaded guilty at the Salinas courthouse Sept. 6 to grand theft of personal property.

Comical Johnson's charge was a felony, and he was sentenced to serve one year in Futon County Jail in Atlanta, where the couple live.

Nitric Johnson will serve 180 days in jail for her misdemeanor charge.
Georgia officials shut down the Johnson's' operations in March 2001.
