Former city computer contractor accused of perjury

By
ATLANTA - A federal grand jury has indicted a former member of ex-Mayor Bill Campbell's campaign finance committee, who also did business with the city, on charges of perjury and obstruction of justice.

The indictment alleges that Samuel Barber Jr. lied in grand jury testimony about reimbursing employees of his American Computer Technology company for $10,000 in contributions to Campbell's 1997 re-election campaign.

Barber's company, which contracted with Atlanta and other public entities to integrate technology systems, had already contributed $1,000 to the campaign, and Barber had donated $2,000, the maximum allowed by law, the grand jury said.

In August 2001, Barber denied under oath that $2,000 checks written to five American Computer Technology employees were connected to $2,000 contributions they made to Campbell's campaign in November 1997, the indictment said.

The indictment is the latest in a three-year federal investigation of corruption in the city of Atlanta. Eight people have either been convicted or pleaded guilty. The latest was Larry Wallace, once the city's chief operating officer, who admitted last month he took $56,000 in illegal cash from a telecommunications company seeking city business.

Campbell has not been accused of criminal activity. He served two four-year terms and was replaced in January by Mayor Shirley Franklin.
