Police Lieutenant Keith Zgonc says two officers were chasing three armed robbery suspects when one of the suspects pointed a gun at the officers.
An officer shot the suspect, a 20-year-old from Smyrna, in the chest. The suspect, whose name has not been released, was taken to Emory Adventist Hospital, where he died.
Police were expected to determine today whether the officer involved in the shooting will be suspended during the investigation.
The two other suspects, a 33-year-old man and a 16-year-old boy, both from College Park, are being held without bond.
Smyrna police were answering an armed robbery call at an apartment building just after midnight. The officers chased a vehicle with three men that matched the description of the robbery suspects, Zgonc said.
After a short chase, the suspects fled on foot. The shooting was the first for the department in almost two years.
