Ole Miss looking for answers after second straight sad performance

By
OXFORD, MISSISSIPPI - A second straight lopsided loss has Mississippi coach David Cutcliffe searching to find out what has gone wrong with the Rebels.

``When you have a game that goes like the past two have, there is certainly a lot of investigating going on and we are doing a lot of that,'' Cutcliffe said during his Monday press conference.

``We made some changes prior to the Arkansas game and we're going to continue to make changes where changes need to be made. It's a constant evaluation whether you win or lose, but losing definitely magnifies that.''

Ole Miss lost 48-28 to Arkansas last Saturday. The week before the Rebels were pounded at Alabama, 42-7.

Less than a month ago, Ole Miss defeated Florida and moved into the national rankings.

One of the greatest areas of concern heading into Saturday's game against Auburn is the kicking game.

Arkansas, which scored two touchdowns on fumbled kickoffs by Ole Miss, used numerous big plays on special teams to gain control of the game late in the first half and early in the third quarter.

``Certainly, we had some trouble in the kicking game against Arkansas. With a little over three minutes to go in the first half, it was a 17-11 game and then halfway through the third quarter, it became a 41-14 game,'' Cutcliffe said. ``There were a lot of bizarre set of circumstances that got it to that point and a lot of it involved the kicking game. We never gave ourselves a chance to see what might have occurred the rest of the game because of that and that's why we have to evaluate all phases and play better team football.''

The Rebels' running game also continues to sputter. Ole Miss ranks 104th in the nation after gaining just 36 yards rushing against the Razorbacks.

``Our running game hasn't been near as good as I thought it would be and the reasons for that are numerous,'' Cutcliffe said. ``We haven't blocked well and we haven't been as consistent as we need to be running the ball. There are a few teams in this league that running well and when you do, it adds another dimension to your team.''

One positive heading into the week is that the Rebels will be back at home where they are 5-0.

``I'm glad to be back at home and playing in front of our fans who should be the loud ones for a change,'' Cutcliffe said. ``We still have a lot to play for and I don't think you will see any quit in this team.''
