ATLANTA - Jurors will begin considering charges Thursday against an East Point woman accused in the death of her three-year-old granddaughter.
Judge Bensonetta Lane charged the jury today in the case against 45-year-old Beverly Headspeth. She is accused of involuntary manslaughter in the death of her granddaughter, Alexis.
Jurors will begin deliberating the case after lunch.
Headspeth is accused of failing to protect her granddaughter by leaving her in the care of her 11-year-old son, who prosecutors say killed Alexis. The girl's six-year-old sister testified on Tuesday that she saw the son put Alexis in the bathtub and hold her under water July 29th.
Alexis was taken to a hospital that night and pronounced dead August first.
Headspeth's boyfriend, Gregory Mena-Perez, also is on trial for child cruelty.
Her attorney argued yesterday that Headspeth did her best to care for the family.
But prosecutors contend she left the girl in the boy's care despite knowing Alexis could be in danger.
