A low pressure system that had dumped up to a foot of snow on much of the Southeast was moving away from the coast early Friday, making way for clear conditions in most of the East. <br>

A few lingering flurries were forecast for eastern Virginia and North Carolina, but skies were expected to clear by midday. <br>

A trough was expected to bring scattered snow showers to much of the Rockies, with up to 4 inches of accumulations possible in parts of Colorado and Wyoming. Late in the day, light rain and snow showers were forecast for western Texas and the west-central Plains. <br>

A few inches of snow was possible in North Dakota, with snowfall dwindling by midday. <br>

Coastal showers were expected in the Pacific Northwest by afternoon. <br>

Highs on Friday were forecast in the teens in northern New England; 20s and 30s in the Northeast, Great Lakes, Ohio Valley, upper Midwest, northern Plains and central and southern Rockies; 40s in the Pacific Northwest, Great Basin, southern Rockies, central and southern Plains, mid-Atlantic states and most of the Deep South; and 50s and 60s in Florida, the Gulf Coast, southern Texas, California and the Southwest. <br>

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Thursday ranged from a high of 73 degrees in Thermal, Calif., to a low of 20 below in Gunnison, Colo. <br>
