Man arrested for allegedly making terrorist threats against California power plant

SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO, Calif. - A former nuclear plant worker was arrested for allegedly making terrorist threats against plant employees, authorities said.

Officials served a search warrant on a storage shed rented by the man early Wednesday and found more than 200 weapons along with thousands of rounds of ammunition. Orange County deputies arrested the man, who was not immediately identified, on Tuesday.

"We take every threat serious, especially those from former employees of a nuclear power plant," said sheriff's spokesman Jim Amormino. "Is the person capable of carrying out the threat? Considering we found a cache of weapons and ammunition, we think the answer is yes."

Two sheriff's deputies were overcome by fumes at the shed from an unknown chemical, said Lt. Greg Russell. Authorities described the chemical as a yellow vapor found in a can. Both deputies were being examined.

Russell said a friend of the suspect contacted authorities earlier this week about the terrorist threats. The nature of those threats was not immediately released.

The man was booked for investigation of terrorist threats and was being held in the Orange County Men's Central Jail in Santa Ana.

The threat occurred at the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station, which is owned by Southern California Edison. It is 65 miles south of Los Angeles.
