GHS's Wilson mulling offer to return to Furman

By By Jeff Hart
GREENVILE, S.C. - Gainesville High football coach Steve Wilson confirmed Wednesday morning that he has been contacted by Furman University to become that school's defensive coordinator.

"I have been contacted," Wilson said. "(New Furman coach Bobby Lamb) called me the other day and I talked to him (Tuesday). I told him I needed a couple of days to think about it."

Wilson is a graduate and former coach at Furman and admits it's something to consider.

"The idea of getting back into the college level is intriguing," Wilson said. "But it's always tough to leave a place. We have some great kids here and some great coaches."

Wilson said he needs to consult with his family and Gainesville school administrators before making any decision. But he did say that he should have an answer for both schools by the end of today.

"I definitely need to talk to a few people but I want to have a decision made by today," he said.

Gainesville Athletic Director Wayne Vickery said he has not talked to Wilson about any changes or moves.

Wilson, who was Furman's defensive coordinator, was replaced by Bruce Fowler. But Fowler followed Bobby Johnson to Vanderbilt.

Now, Wilson could be replacing the man who replaced him.

Lamb said he cannot hire Wilson officially until next week, because of university policy, but he hopes to reach an agreement with Wilson as soon as possible.

Lamb said he cannot finalize new hires until five days after the students return to school Thursday.

Wilson, 46, coached linebackers during his entire tenure as a Furman assistant, and he was defensive coordinator for the final six seasons.

He then left to become head coach at his alma mater in Gainesville.

Wilson was a four-year letterman as a Furman linebacker from 1973-77, and he served as an assistant coach at Buford High School and Mars Hill College before returning to Furman.

Furman also needs to replace receivers/tight ends coach Ted Cain, who also left for Vanderbilt, but Lamb said he has not yet begun that search.
