ATLANTA - State environmental officials are thinking about banning residential outdoor watering as a way to save water in the drought that has gripped Georgia for at least four years.
The Department of Natural Resources wants to limit outdoor residential watering statewide to three days a week for odd-numbered addresses and thre days for even-numbered addresses. No one would be allowed to water on Fridays.
If that provision of the State Drought Management Plan were approved, outdoor residential watering would not be allowed on Fridays.
Harold Reheis, head of the state Environmental Protection Division, says the agency chose to eliminate Friday because all homeowners would still have one weekend day to water.
Officials say the plan will be reviewed and revised during the next three months.
The idea came out of the Comprehensive Water Plan Joint Study Committee, which was formed last year to come up with a comprehensive water management plan by September 1.
