GAINESVILLE, FLORIDA - Florida's search for a head football coach has ended with New Orleans Saints defensive coordinator Ron Zook.
Saints head coach Jim Haslett says Zook has been hired to replace Steve Spurrier, who resigned last week after leading the Gators to an Orange Bowl win over Maryland.
The Gainesville Sun says the 47-year-old Zook will be introduced as the school's 20th head football coach Wednesday.
He met with athletic director Jeremy Foley for about two hours Tuesday after Denver Broncos coach Mike Shanahan turned down the job.
Zook is no stranger to the Florida program. He served as defensive coordinator for two years before Spurrier demoted him to special teams coordinator and linebackers coach in 1994. He stayed at Florida for two more years before joining the Pittsburgh Steelers.
