Fort Gordon spends $2.1 million to upgrade security

By
FORT GORDON - Fort Gordon has spent $2.1 million to beef up security since the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, post officials reported.

The amount covers a wide range of upgrades, including barricades, additions to the site's security force, and additional training and protective equipment for those personnel, said Marla Jones, a spokeswoman at the Army post.

Many of the upgrades had been planned before Sept. 11, Jones said.

As part of a national effort to increase security at military bases, Fort Gordon already had tightened access in June, requiring employees to register vehicles and checking unregistered vehicles at the gates.

Fort officials have been reluctant to provide many details about new security measures, as not to compromise their efforts.

Since the attacks, civilian access to the fort has been closely monitored.
