Newton indicted for drug trafficking

DALLAS - Former Dallas Cowboys offensive lineman Nate Newton has been indicted on federal drug-trafficking counts.<br> <br> The indictment, dated Tuesday, alleges that the 40-year-old six-time Pro Bowl player and three other suspects conspired to possess and distribute marijuana. Also charged are 30-year-old Bruce Freeman-Canady of Jacksonville, Florida; 25-year-old Billy Crenshaw of Dallas; and 25-year-old Charles Deaundra Howard of Garland.<br> <br> Authorities say Newton and Freeman-Canady were travelling in Newton&#39;s pickup truck in convoy with a car driven by Howard. The convoy was stopped about 25 miles south of Dallas. Agents say they found ten thousand dollars in cash in Newton&#39;s pickup and 175 pounds of marijuana in in the trunk of the car.<br> <br> The 40-year-old former Cowboy helped the Cowboys win three Super Bowls in the 1990s. He spent 14 seasons in the NFL, 13 with Dallas. The East Ellijay resident retired last year after a season with the Carolina Panthers.
