GAINESVILLE - Gainesville's Red Rabbit bus system will be one-year-old January 22nd and ridership is running ahead of projections, according to the woman in charge of the system.

Lynda Peters, Transit Coordinator for Hall Area Transit, said ridership has been "much better" than expected.

"We started out at about 500-550 rides, one-way rides per week and are up (to) about 800-900 rides per week," Peters said.

Peters added "so, we feel that our 40 percent increase, or whatever it is, is really great."

Peters said she attributes the success of the Red Rabbit to date on a number of things.

"We're convenient, we've been sticking to our schedules, our buses are clean, and I think people have learned they can depend on us."

Peters said that to mark the one-year anniversary of tr he Red Rabbit, the system will offer free rides and Red Rabbit souvenirs on all its routes January 22.

Peters comments during an appearance on this weekend's Northeast Georgia This Week on WDUN AM 550, AM 1240 WGGA, and Majic 102.9.
