ATLANTA - A MARTA train struck and killed a homeless man Saturday who apparently was sleeping in a tunnel.
The Arts Center transit station in midtown Atlanta was closed for about three hours after the 7 a.m. incident. Passengers were shuttled around the station on buses, MARTA spokeswoman Steen Miles said.
The victim, Jerry Smith, 35, was from Bremen but had been living on Atlanta streets for about a year, according to the Fulton County Medical Examiner's office.
Authorities believe Smith was struck by an earlier train whose conductor did not see him. The operator of a second northbound train spotted the man about a quarter mile inside the tunnel.
Police believe Smith worked as a day laborer, Miles said. Alcohol might have played a role in the accident, she said.
