ATHENS - The Princeton Review has named Atlanta and Athens among the country's top 10 college towns.
Emory University in Atlanta is ranked second on the list of great college towns, which appears in the 2002 edition of The Princeton Review's annual guide book, ``The Best 331 Colleges.'' The University of Georgia ranks seventh.
Each year, The Princeton Review, a Princeton, N.J.-based test preparation and college resource company, conducts surveys among students at colleges across the country, ranking the schools in 62 categories based on what the students say.
This year, the list of top 10 college towns also includes New Orleans, Boston and New York City. Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. topped this year's list.
Athens' ``legendary music scene'' is cited and the list states the town is ``chock full of terrific clubs, excellent restaurants and fantastic coffeehouses.''
``We think that's great news, and we agree,'' UGA spokesman Chuck Toney said Monday. ``Certainly, we believe one of the attractions of UGA is Athens and all the variety in town.''

Art Jackson, executive director of the Athens Downtown Development Authority, agreed. Jackson said Monday that the list takes into account a diverse range of restaurants and live entertainment venues not just the number of bars downtown.
``It's a real honor for us,'' he said. ``I think it reflects well on our businesses who make our students feel welcome. It's nice to be recognized with New York and Boston.''
The Princeton Review list ranks Athens above the University of California in Berkeley, Tulane University in New Orleans, La., and the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor.
