GAINESVILLE - Signs will soon be going up around Lake Lanier, designating pipes that discharge wastewater into the lake.
About 25 such sites have been identified in Gainesville and Hall County. But, only two in Gainesville itself - those at the Linwood and Flat Creek treatment plants. The signs are being required by the Georiga Environmental Protection Division.
Steve Payne, the Environmental and Treatment Division Manager for the City of Gainesville Public Utilities Department, says the signs will tell people what kinds of discharges are being made into the lake and how to report possible problems.
But, Payne says he views their purpose as "more public awareness" than anything else.
