ATLANTA - Gov. Roy Barnes has appointed former Atlanta City Council President Marvin Arrington to a new seat on the Superior Court.
Arrington was one of five candidates the Judicial Nominating Commission selected from 28 who applied for the $140,000 job.
Barnes' spokeswoman said the governor was satisfied that Arrington was the best candidate despite allegations of conflict of interest when he was council president.
Arrington's reputation also was tarnished by a videotape that showed him accepting money from an FBI informant during an investigation into bribery at Hartsfield Atlanta International Airport in 1993. Arrington was never charged.
``The governor picks the person who he thinks is most qualified to receive the judicial appointment,'' Barnes spokeswoman Joselyn Baker said.
Former U.S. Rep. Buddy Darden, who resigned as chairman of the nominating commission this week to run again for Congress, said he was satisfied there will be no clouds hanging over Arrington as a judge.
