Morris Brown won't evict students over unpaid bills

By
ATLANTA - The 250 Morris Brown College students threatened with eviction for owing the school more than $5,000 each will be allowed to stay in campus housing, officials said Friday.

Students were told last month that they would not be provided housing in the spring if they had not settled their accounts.

About 100 of the students have either brought their accounts up to date or have arranged payment plans with the college, said Morris Brown spokeswoman Karon Stephens. The other students are expected to work out payment plans.

Mark Cisco, director of residential living, said the college will continue to work with students with unpaid bills, but students who continue to owe money could be kicked out eventually.

Morris Brown also decided not to end its contract with a local motel where about 200 students lived last fall. College officials had said they would end their contract with the motel this month because it was too expensive.

Morris Brown, one of six historically black schools that make up the Atlanta University Center, has a history of financial problems and was $10 million in debt in 1993. It is currently on probation with the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, the accrediting agency for Southern colleges and universities.
