State Rep. Bob Holmes (D-Atlanta, Chairman, House Governmental Affairs Committee (D) says politics and racism have prevented the Metro Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority from being what it was meant to be, a regional transportation system.
"I support a state takeover of MARTA by absorbing it into GRTA as a way of creating a truly regional transportation authority that is funded in an equitable manner by the five metro region counties," Holmes said.
"The metro counties have voted against having MARTA in their areas, and now they're establishing their own bus systems. They will never buy into MARTA now," Holmes said.
Holmes will introduce a resolution in the General Assembly to establish a study commission to investigate the means of moving MARTA under GRTA. He'll meet with Gov. Roy Barnes on Jan. 28 to discuss the commission
