Governor's Mansion to get two elms

By
ATLANTA - Two elms will be planted Thursday on the front lawn of the Georgia Governor's Mansion.

The Princeton American elm trees were donated by the Clean Air Campaign in recognition of Governor Barnes' efforts toward reducing traffic and improving air quality.

The trees will be planted during a closed ceremony at 1 p.m.

Elms were once one of the most dominant trees in America. They have been vanishing since the 1930s when many began dying from Dutch elm disease.

The large, disease-resistant Princeton American elms are grown by Riveredge Farms in Atlanta. The trees are a more mature version of the trees the company began selling two years ago.

The trees were first propagated by Princeton Nurseries and were planted in the 1930s along the road leading into the Princeton University campus in New Jersey.
