He'll be replaced by assistant coach Rick Wilson on an interim basis. In addition, the Stars have reassigned general manager Bob Gainey and replaced him with assistant general manager Doug Armstrong.
Hitchcock guided the Stars to the Stanley Cup in 1999 and has led them to five straight division titles. His record is 277-160-60-6 since taking over as coach with 43 games left in the 1995-96 season.
Dallas has lost six of its last nine home games and trails first place San Jose by four points in the Pacific Division. However, the Stars are seventh overall in the Western Conference.
Wilson will be behind the bench when the Stars host Anaheim Friday night. He's been an assistant with the Stars for ten seasons.
