New coaches named at Johnson, Jefferson

By by Ken Stanford
Johnson High School named a new head football coach Monday morning, while published reports say that Jefferson named their new football boss last Friday.

Blair Armstrong comes to Johnson from Grayson High School in Gwinnett County where he has been serving as defensive coordinator.

The Augusta Chronicle reports that Hepzibah head coach Bill Navas has taken the job at Jefferson, moving from AAAA to Class A.

Armstrong has spent 24 years in coaching in Georgia and Florida, eleven years as a head coach. He won a Florida state championship and was named Coach of the Year in 1982.

Armstrong says he is thrilled for the chance to turn Johnson into a winning team.

"I'm especially excited because I like going to a program where they haven't had success and then seeing the success develop."

Armstrong feels his experience makes him the right man to turn Johnson around."

"I've been there. I've built several programs that were really down, some that were much further down than this one. There's a base here. There's a base that's been built and we've just got to take from that base and continue to move forward."

He will replace Gary McCroskey, who resigned a few weeks ago after posting a 9-40-1 record over five years at Johnson.

Johnson's season opener is August 30th at home against West Hall.

Navas went 7-13 in his first two seasons with the Rebels, but this past season led Hepzibah to its first winning season since 1985. Navas went 6-5, led the Rebs to their first-ever playoff appearence, and was the Chronicle's 2001 Georgia Coach of the Year.

He replaces Bob Gurley, who resigned after a 5-6 season.
