Female kicker giving up football for soccer

JACKSONVILLE, ALABAMA - Ashley Martin, who broke a gender barrier last season by becoming the first woman to play in a Division One football game, is quitting the sport at the urging of her soccer coach. <br> <br> Martin, who also kicked for her high school team in Sharpsburg, Georgia, said she will play only soccer next year at Jacksonville State, Alabama, where she was the backup placekicker on the football team. <br> <br> She became the first woman to play and score in an NCAA Division I football game last fall when she kicked three extra points in the season opener against NAIA Cumberland. Later, she became the first woman to score against an NCAA team when she kicked an extra point at Sam Houston State. <br> <br> With the soccer team, Martin started all 17 games and was the team&#39;s leading scorer with five goals and three assists. <br> <br> Martin wanted to play both sports again, but agreed to a change after a series of talks with football coach Jack Crowe and soccer coach Lisa Howe.
