Mule Camp Market: A Gainesville tradition
It's that special time of fall in Gainesville. The weather is unseasonably warm, a spike from the week before's cooler temperatures. The Square's streets are closed, and a carnival has set up shop near Jesse Jewell Parkway. It's the one, the only, Mule Camp Market.

Brace yourself for Booger Hill
There is a scientific explanation, but that's not as thrilling as the local legend. The road is one of few gravity hills, which allow your car, in neutral, to roll up the hill.

Highway to Helen
After the logging buisness died down, an argyle sock factory opened (I'm not making this up.) When the fashions changed, the factory closed, and in 1969, Helen residents were left wondering what to do.

All aboard the Gainesville Midland
The Gainesville Midland Railroad started in 1904 and ended the Atlantic Coast Line. Steam Locomotive 209 was built in American for the Czar of Russia, but was canceled due to the Russian Revolution in 1917.

Parting is such sweet sorrow
Everyone loves a good love story, and the Nacoochee Mound is no exception. The legend is Princess Nacoochee of the Cherokees fell in love with Sautee, a young braveheart in the rival Chickasaw tribe. After spending some romantic days on Yonah Mountain, Nacoochee's father, the tribe leader, captured Sautee, and sentenced him to death.

Detour: Glory to Ole Brenau
I spent an awful lot of time in the Brenau University archives as a college student. So much time, actually, that my name was permanently added to (and still is on) the list of people allowed in the archival room in the Trustee Library.
