A longtime councilman with the City of Cumming recently passed away.

A social media post from the City of Cumming said former Councilman Ralph Perry passed away Saturday at the age of 82.

Perry's obituary from Ingram Funeral Home & Crematory said he served as a city council member from 1979 to 2015. He was also the city's representative to the Georgia Mountains Regional Commission for 11 years. Perry served as a volunteer firefighter and on the former Civil Defense Rescue Service.

He retired from Sawnee EMC after 43 years of service and was a member and past member of the Lafayette Masonic Lodge #44.

"He also coached many little league sports for over 20 years, and was an active member of Pleasant View Baptist Church where he served as a deacon and taught Sunday School for many years," the post from the City of Cumming said.

Flags at Cumming City Hall were flown at half-staff Monday and Tuesday in honor of Perry's years of service.

Perry and his wife Joyce were married for 63 years. They have two children, Tim (Nancy) Perry and Cindy (Mark) Coffman, along with three grandchildren.
