Russell Vandiver, former Lanier Tech president, dies at age 67

Russell Vandiver, former president of Lanier Technical College, passed away this week at the age of 67.

Best remembered in the community for his commitment to the college, Vandiver was named president in 2010. Prior to this position, Vandiver served as vice president of Economic Development. During his time with Lanier Tech, Vandiver was recognized for recruiting twenty local companies that brought thousands of jobs to North Georgia residents. Vandiver retired from the college after 38 years of employment.

Vandiver was born James Russell Vandiver in Clarkesville to the late Cecil Russell Vandiver and the late Sarah Lannelle Shirley Vandiver. Vandiver earned a bachelor's degree from the University of West Georgia, a master's degree from Brenau University and a specialist's degree from the University of Georgia. 

In his personal time, Vandiver was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed spending time with family, especially his grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held this Saturday at 11 a.m. in the Christ Place Church. Dr. Jeff Crook will officiate. The burial will follow in the Talmo Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the graveside following the service. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, those attending are asked to maintain safe social distancing and wear a protective mask.

In lieu of flowers, memorials should be made to the Sibley Heart Center at Children’s Health Care, 3300 Old Milton Parkway, Suite 100, Alpharetta, Georgia, 30005 or at choa.org. Evans Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
