Lawrenceville couple arrested for Norcross murder

A man and woman from Lawrenceville were arrested Sunday in connection with the murder of another man from the city earlier that morning in Norcross.

According to a press release from the Gwinnett County Police Department, Esteven Avile-Vega, 26, and Sulma Mejia-Orellana, 26, were both charged in connection with the shooting death of Angel Mendoza, 39, of Lawrenceville. Both suspects were arrested at a home in Lawrenceville. The agency identified the two as boyfriend and girlfriend.

Authorities were dispatched at about 1:10 a.m. Sunday to a person shot call on Pepperwood Trail in Norcross. Arriving officers found Mendoza dead from an apparent gunshot wound.

Vega was charged with felony murder, aggravated assault and possession of a firearm during the commission of certain crimes. Orellana was charged with aggravated assault. 

Both suspects were in the Gwinnett County Jail as of Sunday evening.
