By Caleb Hutchins Assistant News Director

Gwinnett County authorities are warning the public about phone scammers posing as law enforcement.

A release from the Gwinnett County Police Department Tuesday said several residents have reported calls that appear to come from the police department telling them they've missed a court appearance and have been sent subpoenas. Police officials said the county police department is not involved with issuing subpoenas for court appearances.

While authorities say these scammers did not immediately ask for money, they warned that often times, scammers posing as law enforcement will. They offered several tips to avoid being victimized.

  • Always ask for the caller's identity and contact the agency immediately.
  • Never disclose personal or financial information to unsolicited callers or by email
  • Never wire money or provide bank account information to anyone you do not know

Anyone who believes they have been targeted or victimized by a phone scam is asked to contact Gwinnett police by calling 770-513-5700.
