COLUMBUS, Ga. (AP) The man who has led the Georgia NAACP for the past eight years said Saturday he plans to step aside this fall.
During a news conference announcing the civil rights group's October convention, Edward DuBose said he wants to let the state NAACP elect a new president during the three-day event.
"It's time," said DuBose, who lives in Columbus. "A good leader has to know when it's time. A leader has to know like Moses did when to pass the torch. It's time for me to pass the torch to a Joshua."
The Georgia NAACP elected Dubose to be its president in 2005 and he went on to serve four terms. Before that he served as vice president of the group's Georgia conference and as its branch president in Columbus.
DuBose said his fellow officers agreed to his wishes to finish out his final term with a convention in the president's hometown.
"I'm so grateful that I'm able to close out saying goodbye to the home crowd," Dubose said.
DuBose is a native of Atlanta who retired from the Army after 21 years of military service in 1998.
