Hall County tax assessments go in the mail Friday

By B.J. Williams
GAINESVILLE - This Friday, about 74,000 tax assessment notices will go in the mail for Hall County property owners, and this year, the numbers may look a little different.

For the first time in a couple of years, property values are remaining mostly flat across the county with some pockets even seeing increased values, according to Hall County Chief Tax Appraiser Steve Watson.

Watson said most property owners are happy when they see tax rates that reflect a good value for their land.

"When we're lowering property values, that's a sign of where the economy is, and so I think overall people would like to see things stable," said Watson.

He feels cautiously optimistic about the leveling off of assessments.

"The positive thing is that the tax digest is not going down at the same rate it has the last couple of years," said Watson.

Watson said he anticipates all of the assessment notices will go in the mail around noon on Friday, April 12. Any appeals would need to be made to his office no later than May 28. (Please note AccessNorthGa.com reported an earlier deadline date in error at original publication of this story.)

Watson made his comments before the Hall County Commission work session Monday afternoon.
