Perdue invests $1 million in Ga. Senate bid

ATLANTA (AP) Republican David Perdue says he's investing $1 million into his campaign for Georgia's open U.S. Senate seat.

Perdue said Thursday he's also raised $810,000 in contributions in the five months since launching his exploratory committee.

The Republican primary for the seat held by retiring Sen. Saxby Chambliss is crowded with a group of well-known or well-financed candidates.

Perdue, a cousin of former Gov. Sonny Perdue, is the former CEO of Dollar General. He donated $500,000 to his campaign and made a $500,000 personal loan. His campaign has about $1.3 million in cash.

Earlier, Rep. Jack Kingston reported raising more than $800,000 in three months with $2.9 million in cash. Reps. Paul Broun and Phil Gingrey and former Secretary of State Karen Handel have yet to report their quarterly fundraising totals.
