GAINESVILLE - The U.S. Forest Service is offering the public a chance to experience the special places on their national forest for free on National Public Lands Day, Saturday, September 18.

According to Kathleen Atkinson, Gainesville-based Forest Supervisor for the Chattahoochee and Oconee National Forests in Georgia, "National Public Lands Day allows people the chance to explore national forest facilities...at no cost."

On the two national forests in Georgia, the Chattahoochee in Northeast Georgia and the Oconee in Central Georgia, both administered by Atkinson's office, all parking and day use fees will be waived as well as additional fees for Off Road Vehicle trail use, campgrounds, and boat launches operated by the Forest Service. Camping is free Saturday night only; charges will resume Sunday.

There are more than 500 miles of trails in the two forests including hiking, biking and horseback riding trails, and more than 24 campgrounds. The Chattahoochee National Forest offers nationally known trails like the Appalachian Trail, Bartram Trail and Benton Mackaye Trail.
