Lakeview's Beth Grindle to retire after 24 years

By by Ken Stanford
GAINESVILLE - After 24 years at the school, Beth Grindle assistant headmaster and head
of the Lower School at Lakeview Academy, plans to retire at the end of the current school year.

"All of us who have had the good fortune to work with and learn from Beth have mixed emotions about the change," said Headmaster Ferrell Singleton. "We just find it difficult to imagine Lakeview without Beth Grindle, a person with great passion for excellence
and boundless energy for whatever she pursues."

Singleton is also retiring after a long tenure with Lakeview. He announced plans in February to step down a year from now.

Grindle came to Lakeview in 1979, and says she has seen many changes over the years. Lakeview has grown from 140 students to well over 500, yet she says some things haven't changed.

"One thing that gives me a sense of pride," she
said, "is that we have never lost the importance of decision-making based on what is good for the children and their learning. It was that way at the beginning, and I am proud to say we still make decisions based on
the best interests of the children."

In her 24 years, Grindle has been involved in many facets of the school. She began the special studies program, and for a while, was the only special studies teacher. She also taught fifth grade as well as middle
school English, and served for a time as combined Lower and Middle School director. She became head of the Lower School and assistant headmaster in 1989.

She is quick to point out that she is not the only one who has juggled several jobs. "I'm proud of the many fine professionals who wear many hats to make
the school go. Whenever our folks see a niche, they are quick to volunteer if they are able to fill the gap. One of my jobs is to make sure that these hardworking folks don't overextend themselves. They do so much for the kids. It's hard to make them take some
down time."

Her career will be celebrated Friday at 9:30 a.m., during Lakeview's annual May Day and during a reception Saturday from 7-9 p.m. at the Northeast Georgia History Center.

Meanwhile, assistant Lower School director Lisa Bendin, has been announced as Grindle's successor.
