UNDATED - Two towns in Northeast Georgia - Cornelia and Toccoa - are included in a new U.S. Census Bureau designation known as a "Micropolitan Statistical Area."
The bureau defines such a city or town as one that is not quite rural, but not quite metro, either.
Twenty-four of the country's 565 "Micropolitan Statistical Areas" are in Georgia.
The largest city in each micropolitan statistical area is designated as the "principal city," and has at least 10,000 but no more than 49,999 people residing there.
Adjacent communities of fewer (often far fewer) than 10,000 residents have a high degree of social and economic integration with the principal city. Additionally, micropolitan statistical areas comprise one or more entire counties.
