South Hall road closing Thursday

By by Ken Stanford
GAINESVILLE - The Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) plans to close a section of road near the busy Hog Mountain/Spout Springs road intersection after noon Thursday, necessitating a detour that will probably be in place for about 45 days.

"We are working with Hall County to reconstruct the intersection of Hog Mountain and Spout Springs. Once finished the intersection will have right and left turn lanes on each side of the intersection and a signal will be installed," explained District Engineer Todd Long.

"On Thursday...the northern side of Hog Mountain from the intersection with Spout Springs to Porter Road will be closed to through traffic. We are raising the grade of the intersection 8 feet higher so there is no option but to close this section while we work to upgrade it."

The detour route is Georgia Highway 13/Atlanta Highway to Thurmond Tanner Parkway to Phil Niekro Boulevard/Spout Springs Road. The detour will be necessary for 45 days, weather permitting, and the road should reopen on Sunday, January 17.

The road closing planned Thursday was originally scheduled this past Monday.

The planned completion date is May 1 and the estimated cost of construction is $2.1 million. GDOT's investment in the project is $800,000 and is also providing construction supervision.

Crews will complete the striping and installation of signs Thursday morning and the northern leg of Hog Mountain Road will be closed to through traffic after lunch.

"Thursday morning you can still use the northern section of Hog Mountain but after lunch the section from Spout Springs Road to Porter Road will be closed to through traffic," Long explained. "There is a hair salon on this section and access will be maintained to that business but you won't be able to drive all the way down to the intersection with Spout Springs."

Porter Road is also closed except to people who live on the road.
