First-in-nation USFS land grant

By by Ken Stanford
CLAYTON - Rabun County will be the site Thursday of a ceremony during marking a first-in-the-nation U.S. Forest Service (USFS) land transfer.

The forest service will give 45 acres to the Rabun County Board of Education in a ceremony Governor Roy Barnes plans to attend. The transfer is the first in the country under the Education Land Grant Act which was signed by President Clinton in December 2000. The legislation was introduced by Congressman J.D. Hayworth of Arizona in 1999 and was approved by Congress the following year.

Georgia is the first state to successfully complete the application and conveyance process.

The Rabun County Board of Education will use the land as the site for a new elementary school.
