Gainesville council approves sewer agreement

By by Jerry Gunn
GAINESVILLE- The Gainesville City Council Monday approved that multi-million dollar, controversial Georgia 365 sewer agreement with the county.

The vote was 4-0 with Mark Musselwhite abstaining.

Councilman Bob Hamrick was earlier leaning toward voting against the proposal, but voted with the majority as they approved the $14 million pact.

Hall County commission chairman Gary Gibbs, who was at Monday's meeting, told the council its vote was the best Christmas present he could receive.

The agreement assigns daily treatment of one million gallons of sewer to the Highway 365 corridor in North Hall County.

Gibbs said he wants the service for commerce, industry and business but could serve the entire county eventually with a million gallons a day.

Outgoing Gainesville Manager Carlyle Cox attended his last city council meeting Monday.

Cox received a standing ovation from council members and the audience.

He said the city and county have a challenge to continue serving the community with joint projects.

Assistant City Manager Bryan Shuler takes over the top post in January.

The council also said farewell to Myrtle Figueras as mayor, who completes a two year term.

Beginning in January, she will move back to her council post and Mayor Protem Evelyn "Sissy" Lawson will take the mayor's seat.
