GAINESVILLE - Assistant Gainesville City Manager Bryan Shuler Monday was named to succeed the retiring Carlyle Cox as city manager.

Cox is retiring at the end of the year.

Shuler was Development Services Director for Gainesville/Hall County and became assistant city manager a year and a half ago.

The Gainesville City Council Monday morning unanimously approved him as Cox's successor. The other finalist for the job was Ken Thompson, the city manager for Frankfort, Kentucky.

Shuler was selected from 112 applicants from across the country and City Council unanimously approved his appointment.

Among those congratulating Shuler was outgoing City Manager Carlyle Cox, who said the council made the right choice.

"Carlyle is a tough act to follow," said Shuler. "I've enjoyed working with him and will continue working with him through the transition. I committ to you that I will do the best jobI can as your city manager in continuing to move Gainesville forward."
