Both the Johnson and Lumpkin County boys’ golf teams feel they have something to prove as they prepare for Monday’s Class AAA state championships at Maple Ridge Golf Course in Columbus.

Some familiar faces - and some not so familiar - highlighted the first day of the talent-rich Region 7-AAA boys track-and-field meet Friday at Flowery Branch High School.

Youth was served for Gainesville on Wednesday in the Red Elephants’ winner-take-all battle for the Region 7-AAA title against Creekview at Ivey-Watson Field.

Despite coming into Friday’s game against rival Johnson just 4-18, Flowery Branch baseball coach Jimmy Lawler was adamant about one thing: “We’re the best 4-18 team I’ve ever seen,” he told his team during pre-game warm-ups.

Gainesville shaved its magic number to clinch the top spot in Region 7B-AAA down to two after taking an impressive 15-1 win in five innings over White County Wednesday at White County Field.

Chestatee stayed close with Class AAA No. 2-ranked Lambert for a half before eventually falling 4-0 Friday in Region 7-AAA girls soccer action.

Youth was served Thursday in the finals of the Region 7-AAA tennis championships at the Bobby Bailey Tennis Center. Lambert, a first-year school with no seniors, rode the backs of several freshmen to bring home both the girls and boys titles, the school’s first-ever athletic championships.
